Why We Teach the Bible
About a year ago, Taylor and I trekked up to Vancouver, BC to participate in The Simeon Trust training. Part of that time involved hearing women teach from portions of 1 Samuel. The first exposition had the greatest impact on me, and I want to share some of that experience with you. As I do, I hope your minds travel back to messages that have powerfully impacted you because they were biblical, pointed you to Christ, and applied to your life at exactly the right moment.
Susan Jahns spoke from Hannah’s song (1 Sam. 2:1-11). Hannah had suffered through barrenness, the ridicule of a jealous woman, her husband’s misunderstanding, and being falsely accused of drunkenness by a priest. In some ways, I felt like Hannah that day because I was also suffering in a situation that made no sense to me. Susan articulated it perfectly as she prompted, “Is there a situation in your life that feels like a depressing pile of puzzles pieces that don’t seem to go together at all?” My heart cried out, “Yes!”
Susan then moved to God’s work in Hannah’s life. In the midst of her suffering, Hannah entrusted herself to the Lord in prayer. In his time, God brought about great deliverance and redemption through the birth of a son. And in response, Hannah sang a song of praise. From her words, Susan pointed out that Hannah’s God is a big God, an in-control-of-everything God, who uses his power to bring about great reversals for the good of his people . She was able to show how, right in the middle of Hannah’s praise, there is the promise that Jesus would come and bring about the greatest reversal of all, taking us from death to life (1 Samuel 2:10). She asked, “Are you willing to trust this One even when the pieces of your life don’t fit?” Once again, my heart cried out, “Yes!”
My spirit rested knowing that the things that don’t make sense to me do make sense to God…
As you can probably guess, I left that time changed. Although the Lord had not yet acted in my personal situation to bring about deliverance and redemption, I knew that he would ultimately. First, he would use the suffering to transform me. Second, he would work in the actual situation to bring about a joyful end. I might get some of that in this life; I am guaranteed to have it all when Jesus returns. His Spirit had, through Susan’s teaching, brought his own promises, from the Bible, to my situation. My spirit rested knowing that the things that don’t make sense to me do make sense to God… he is putting the pieces together, although I may not see the overall picture yet. If he loved me enough to send Jesus to pay for my sins so that I might move from death to life, he is certainly willing to work everything together in my life for good .
Okay, let’s get back to your experiences. I imagine that many of you have a story a lot like mine, although from different teachers and on different topics. God has gifted certain men and women to teach the Bible and apply it to our lives. In fact, I think that this is one of the most important ways that God ministers the gospel to me. Teaching is an act of humble service to the listeners. I am so thankful that he has done this, and I bet you are, too.
Here’s the point: Are you one of these gifted women? Are you gifted to teach the Bible?
I know what you’re thinking: “I could never get up in front of that many people.” “I struggle so much with pride, and I think I’d only be thinking about whether or not they’ll like me.” “I don’t know the Bible well enough.” “No one will want to listen to what I’m saying.” I know you’re thinking those thoughts, because I think them, too.
Ah…but don’t forget! God is the God of great reversals! If he has gifted you to do this and is calling you, he will deliver you continually from these obstacles. He can overcome your fear of public speaking. He can humble your heart so that you can teach as a servant. He can equip you to know Bible. He can enable you to proclaim the gospel, and the people he brings will benefit from it.
At Verity Forum, we want to give you the opportunity to either explore your teaching gifts for the first time or grow in what you already know. Two of our workshops in this track will help you understand the Bible better, especially in the light of who Jesus is and what he’s done. The third will help you know how to prepare a message from a passage of Scripture.
If the Lord is piquing your interest in teaching the Bible, please come to these workshops. Look at the impact just one woman’s teaching had on my life. Think back to the times your Father had fed you this way. And ask him whether he might also use you to bring the message of the Scriptures to his people in the same way. If he is, you can trust him to do it.
The Verity Forum is our spring event on May 7th, 2016. You can read more about the Verity Forum workshops on our events page and find there downloadable media from the event.
