Inductive Bible Study: Why You Should Come to My Workshop
Whether I’m feeling passionate about the Presidential candidates or not, dinner is served in front of the TV at our house when the debates are on. I don’t know which I enjoy more – watching the actual debate or watching the newscasters and political pundits interpret the candidate’s words after the debate is over.
I’m thankful the word of God never needs to be fact checked, but it does need to be interpreted.
I’m thankful the word of God never needs to be fact checked, but it does need to be interpreted. To that end we have the help of the Holy Spirit. The Lord has also given us some basic tools and methods. For over 20 years, I’ve been thinking about how to use these tools in the study of God’s word.
At the Verity conference on October 7th and 8th, I’m looking forward to sharing some of those tools and methods with you in a workshop. We will explore questions such as
* “What does genre have to do with understanding a passage of Scripture?” (Don’t worry if you can’t remember what genre means; we’ll cover that too).
* “How do I identify the main point of the passage?”
* “What does this passage have to do with Jesus and the gospel?”
* “How does context affect the meaning of a passage?”
Practicing these and other skills will impact our interpretation of Scripture. When all this hard work is done, we’ll be better able to effectively and faithfully apply God’s word to our lives and the lives of others.
If you come to my workshop you won’t be able to sit back and just listen. After I explain how we use these skills, I’m going to put you to work! You’ll immediately start practicing what you’ve learned on several different Bible passages. This workshop is for beginners and veterans alike. Everyone should learn a new skill or walk away having honed their method of Bible study.
I do love the presidential debates, but I love studying God’s Word with women even more, so I’m looking forward to the upcoming Verity conference. How energizing to gather in a sanctuary filled with women who love God’s Word and want to dig into it deeply. I can’t wait to hear what treasures Mary Willson will share with us from the book of Deuteronomy. See you there.
