Passing on God's Promises

Passing on God's Promises

When my little brother passed away, my husband and I were young Bible school students with a baby. We didn't have a local support system in this overwhelming and scary time. Yet, when it was time to fly across the country for the funeral, we immediately began to see God's faithfulness to us. My husband sat next to a believer on the plane, who said that he had found $20 on the ground in the airport, and that God was leading him to give it to us. Then, the chaplain who performed Nathan's funeral handed my husband a check. Our church payed for our airfare to and from North Carolina. You see, we did not have means to provide for ourselves in this time of crisis, but God was faithful through his people

Fast forward nine months. I left the hospital with my second baby, but with a pit in my stomach and nagging thought in the back of my mind. My precious new baby was being sent home, 45 minutes from the nearest hospital on good roads (which were currently covered with snow and ice) without ever having eaten and with a raspy noise each time he took a breath. The next morning, we headed back to the hospital and arrived just in time to see our new son turning an ashen color. Our son, had lived through the first 36 hours of his short life low on oxygen because both of his lungs had burst with his first breath. He should have passed out long before we got to the hospital. Thankfully, he was quickly evaluated and treated, making a satisfactory recovery within a week and a half. God had faithfully protected our son, showing mercy to our family.

Psalm 78:4 We will not hide them from their children, but tell to the coming generation the glorious deeds of the LORD, and his might, and the wonders that he has done.

Telling Future Generations

Over and over, truths were told and retold until the truths were graven on the hearts of each member of the household.

Why did God tell the Jews to pass down the stories of His faithfulness (Deut. 11:18-19)? Why bind his word on their hearts and talk about them when they rise and when they sleep? The Jewish people would not have had an effective way to share with future generations about God's word, God's promises, or God's goodness if they had not spread it by word of mouth. Over and over, truths were told and retold until the truths were graven on the hearts of each member of the household.

God’s faithfulness seen in our lives today continues to reveal his character as recorded in the Scriptures.

Why do I share these little snippets of my life with you? Because of God's faithfulness in my life. Because of the wonders that he has done (see 1 Peter 2:9)! We plant seeds in our sons, daughters, nieces, nephews, and neighbors heart’s by telling them of God's faithfulness in our lives; of who he is, what he has accomplished, and of his great rescue plan. Speaking truths about God to children and others who have not been exposed to the written Word is planting seeds that are helpful for understanding the good news. God's faithfulness seen in our lives today continues to reveal his character as recorded in the Scriptures. It points to a loving, just, forgiving God who has faithfully kept his promises. His faithfulness through the giving of his son is the ultimate picture that we share because of the smaller pieces of grace and mercy that are evident in our lives.

Evangelism through Personal Testimony

Taking this further, we can see how sharing of God's faithfulness in our lives is a tool in evangelism. Making disciples was not a mission given only to the apostles. It was given to the church. Many people feel uncomfortable setting forth to evangelize. It can be awkward and scary.

I was standing in the checkout line at the store one day with all of my children in tow. My youngest tends to be very vocal, so when she got her finger stuck between the rungs of the cart and got scraped pulling it out, she let it be known. The lady behind us piped up encouragingly, "Isn't it wonderful how God made our bodies to heal when these injuries happen?"

While it would have been perfectly acceptable for this lady to remain silent, she spoke volumes with the one sentence she shared with us. Her sentence told me that she believes in God as the great physician and creator. It also told me that she believes in his promises. She shared with others that God's faithfulness experienced in her life was possible in the lives of others. She laid the groundwork for the gospel to be shared through this one sentence. Because we can see God's faithfulness in our lives today, we can trust his past promises.

Don't shy away from sharing God's goodness and faithfulness in your life. Speak it to yourself, to your children, to your neighbors. May God’s faithful acts be on display for those around us.
