Verity Training for You
Are you excited to teach the Bible? Or perhaps the thought terrifies you, but you think it’s something God wants you to do.
Questions can quickly arise when you realized you are called to teach. How do you communicate the main point of your passage? What’s the best way to organize your message? Where’s the place for illustrations, and where can I find them? How can I bring the application home to the hearts of those who hear? How do I even know that God will transform lives as I teach the Scriptures? We’re here to answer your questions and help prepare you to do it well.
Verity Training is for women who want to begin teaching the Bible or for women who want to grow in teaching the Bible. We never stop growing in teaching, and feedback always pushes us. If you came last year, there will be fresh material for you this year. If you are new to us, you will be able to start right where you are.
This year, Verity Training will be June 22-23, 2018.
What is Verity Training?
Let’s start with some clarification. If you’ve been around The Verity Fellowship, you might have heard of ETW (Exposition Training Weekend). Verity Training is the same event but with a new name. Verity Training (VT) = Exposition Training Weekend (ETW).
With that cleared up, here’s more: Verity Training is a two-day intensive learning experience designed to help you teach the Bible expositionally. Even though we dropped the term “exposition” from our title, we have not moved away from it, because exposition is the heart of Verity Training. Teaching the Bible topically can be beneficial, but this training is focused on teaching one passage of Scripture.
Teaching the Bible expositionally means that the content and shape of your message comes from the content and shape of the passage you’re studying. The author’s main point of your text is the main point of your message, so you work hard to understand the immediate context of your verses. Because all of Scripture points to Jesus and his gospel of grace, expositional teaching also studies to find legitimate ways to get to Christ.
But relaying the author’s intended meaning is only half of the work. After that, you need to take your study and create a cohesive message. You come up with a shape to your message – introduction, main points, conclusion. You find illustrations for your message, so it is communicated in a way that it easy to understand. And you apply the text to the hearts of your listeners, with the hopeful expectation that the Holy Spirit will transform them as they hear.
We believe that this kind of Bible teaching is essential for the salvation of the lost and the edification of God’s people. And this is what Verity Training will teach you to do.
What to Expect
During our two days together you will:
- Get teaching on the foundations of exposition. This will include teaching on how the Holy Spirit works to glorify Christ and change people through expositional teaching.
- Acquire practical skills. Some of these include finding the main point of the passage, organizing a message, coming up with illustrations, and making impactful application.
- Practice what you learn. You will break into small groups to speak your prepared message to other women who will give you both kind and honest feedback.
- Pray together for this work.
- Have fun! You’ll eat great food and develop deep relationships in a welcoming atmosphere.
And when you leave, you will be encouraged that God will work through you, and you will be better equipped for expositional teaching. There’s no need to feel anxious, even of the small group teaching and feedback. Verity Training happens in a loving, supportive environment. Whether this is your first time teaching, or you’ve been doing it for years, we all have much to learn.
We require all women who attend the Verity Training to have attended the Simeon Trust Workshop on Biblical Exposition for women. And there’s a good reason for this! We will base our expositional messages on the work you do at the Simeon Trust Workshop. If you have attended a Simeon Trust Workshop in the past or have (or will) do one of their online options, send us an email, and we can talk through those options.
Here’s the distinction between the two training weekends and why you need both: The Simeon Trust Workshop will help you study the passage well. You will see the structure, the main idea, and how to get application from the text. Your personal study will receive feedback in small groups. This is the perfect preparation for Verity Training, where we will focus on taking that study to complete and deliver an expository message.
Simeon Trust primarily focuses on the Bible study; Verity Training takes that Bible study and helps you craft a message.
This year there is a Simeon Trust Workshop April 26-28, about two months before our Exposition Training. If you can’t attend this workshop, there is also an online version available. Please contact Katie or Taylor to talk about the best option for you.
You’ll also be required to prepare an expository message ahead of time from the work you do for Simeon Trust. Don’t worry! You will be given a detailed worksheet to help you before you come, and you will receive lots of instruction during the weekend to help you grow. The point of this requirement is simply to have a base from which to build.
Registration - Opens January 17
We will keep this training a small group for the purpose of learning well together. Registration will be capped at 20 women this year. The cost is $109 and will include two meals and the materials for the weekend. The text will be 1 Samuel and each woman will have a specific text assigned.
The Simeon Trust Workshop and Verity Training weekend will sell out quickly. Please email us firstname.lastname@example.org if you’d like to register for Verity Training.
